Project Overview

Goondoon Street Precinct

Goondoon Street is a significant street in the city of Gladstone, as it passes through the heart of the Central Business District (CBD) traversing on a north-west south-east axis commencing from the mouth of the Auckland inlet in the north-west and extending to the Lookout and Radar Station to the south-east (click here to view map of the city centre).

Goondoon Street contains civic and significant commercial buildings, and generally these are located between the intersections of Yarroon and Tank Streets. Some of these buildings include the Post Office, Harbour Building, city Theatre, City Council Building, major banks, civic theatre, art gallery and museum and a number of commercial and retail activities.

The north-western part of Goondoon Street is characterised by its vista onto the Inlet and contains two social establishments - the Yacht Club and a nightclub - and several motels and hotels. A redevelopment is proposed for the RSL.

The proposal is located at the harbour end of the CBD and will offer quality apartment style rooms specialising in providing short-term accommodation. The proposal will provide an amenity and facility of a high standard with the aim of attracting business clientele travelling to Gladstone. Business people generally prefer to be located in close proximity to the CBD as their business invariably involves interaction with institutions, local government, government and other business organisations established in the CBD.

The location and activity of the proposal is compatible with the recognised hierarchy that is established and emerging within the Gladstone city centre.

This part of Goondoon Street, north-west of Yarroon Street, contains a hotel and several motels all of which provide short-term accommodation services. This area has a pleasant ambience having vistas across the Auckland Inlet and boat harbour, an environment suited for accommodation services.

The proposal also meets the objectives for acceptable standards in providing on site car parking, landscaping and recreational facilities for house guests and their guests, streetscape improvements in the form of enhanced footpath treatment paving and tree planting. The proposal will contain a café and refreshment bar accessible to the public.

It is proposed to widen Oaka Lane for the width of the frontage of the subject site and extensively landscape each side of the access driveway onto Oaka Lane.
